When My Small Town Chose to Slow Down in 2025
Last night, I witnessed something that made me rethink how we build lasting change.
In our town council meeting, discussing a new facility development that could reshape our community's future (and my neighbourhood), something remarkable happened: the town councillors and our mayor chose to slow down.
Not because it was inefficient. Not because we lacked better tools. But because some decisions deserve more than instant solutions.
Here's what emerged when we made space for real dialogue:
- Hidden concerns surfaced that no analysis could have predicted
- Opposing perspectives found unexpected common ground
- Community wisdom emerged through patient listening
- Solutions evolved through genuine understanding
What I witnessed wasn't just a meeting. It was a reminder that in times of global uncertainty - wars, climate crises, economic shifts - our greatest strength still lies in our ability to come together and ask the hard questions.
Because maybe that's what we're all craving in 2025:
Not faster solutions.
But deeper connections.
Not perfect answers.
But shared understanding.
My dad always says "it all starts at the kitchen table."
After last night, I understand why.
In 2025, while the world races toward instant everything, the most powerful innovations still emerge through human connection. Not because it's easier (it isn't), but because lasting progress requires collective wisdom.
It was a beautiful reminder that:
- Speed isn't always progress
- Some foundations can't be rushed
- Community wisdom emerges through patience
The Magic: While we stayed late into the night, something shifted in that room. The tension between progress and patience started to dissolve. The divide between opposing views softened.
And in its place emerged something more valuable than a quick solution:
Trust. Understanding. Possibility.
In a world racing toward AI and automation and instant gratification, perhaps our most radical act is choosing to remain deliberately, intentionally human.
To pause. To listen. To grow together. (so hard but important)
